January the peak month on the Polish Power Exchange as regards trading on the Day-Ahead Market. Print +

January of 2011 has appeared to be the peak month in ten-year history of the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) on the Polish Power Exchange. Total electricity trading volume on the market has increased (month-to-month) by 19,85% and it has amounted to 1 465 217 MWh. In comparison with similar period of previous year the DAM market trading volume has increased by o 255,75%.

The trading volume increase is instrumental in increasing of the market importance in the process of electricity price creating on the Polish market. The bench mark index is created basing on large volume and higher and higher number of transactions. That is of tremendous importance in connection with a plan for starting of the financial market, the price created on the Day-Ahead Market will be the basic instrument for which.

Since August 2010 liquidity of the DAM market has increased from month to month. Share of the market in total electricity demand of the National Power System (KSE) is also still increasing. In January 2011 average hour share of the DAM trading volume in total hour demand of the National Power System increased up to 10,13% (3,29% during the period from January to July 2010 and 6,25% during the period from August to December 2010).

On view of execution of contracts for given hour of the electricity delivery day share of all POLPX's electricity-dedicated markets in total hour demand of the National Power System amounted (in January 2011) to 58,65% (in average) (with minimum value of 46,75|% and maximum value of 79,08%).

Since the day of December the 15th 2010 the members of the  POLPX and the Scandinavian Nord Pool Spot exchange POLPX members have been given opportunity for trading in electricity with use of the cross-border direct-current 600 MW connection - SwePol (so called "Swedish cable"), basing on so-called "Market Coupling" mechanism, through the Day-Ahead Markets on both exchanges The volume of electricity contracted on the DAM market in January 2011 within the framework of the Market Coupling process amounted   to 63 164 MWh.
